The Dayton Book Expo

A Participating Author’s Evaluation

The Dayton Book Expo was a great vessel for networking and a connecting tool between authors and book lovers. I met people from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky which allowed me to touch lives that would otherwise be out of reach. I was blessed to be amongst other authors;  learning, listening and sharing literacy ideas while introducing my walk and story as well. There were books for every reader. Even my boys purchased books which they read to each other on our drive back to Philadelphia, PA. I was also blessed to be a part of the New Release Celebration where I formally introduced myself and my new book, My Side of the Story.

I encourage any author to join the Dayton Book Expo Family and attend as an author or book lover. It was an experience that I will never forget and an opportunity that I am forever grateful of receiving. Valerie J. Lewis Coleman and the rest of the DBE Team, you are God send and your dedication to the literacy world is appreciated. Thank you for inviting me and I look forward to being a part in 2012.

I enjoyed my time at the Dayton Book Expo and we sold quite a few books. The DBE was one of the best book expos I’ve attended. Everything from the gift bag, the name badges and the meals. Great job! I plan to attend next year! One love and keep up the great work!

The Dayton Book Expo

A Participating Author’s Evaluation

The Dayton Book Expo, which took place on May 1, 2010 at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, was a great success! The well-organized event was sensational from beginning to end.
As participants arrived in the reception area, a team of gentlemen met authors to assist with unloading. I did not have to step out of my car. I was required to do no more than drive up to the curb and pop my trunk. My bags were immediately taken to my designated area indoors. The service helped tremendously in providing smooth transition to and from the loading zone and combated what could have easily become a traffic jam. Additionally, the service provided a very welcoming effect.
Upon entering the David Ponitz Center where the main event was held, guests (authors and attendees) were greeted by a professional and casually uniformed team of support staff. The workers, who I believe were volunteers, greeted everyone with a smile, an official welcome, and a goody bag. Authors were physically escorted to their stations. The hospitality added a nice touch!
Once at our stations, authors were again officially greeted, asked about our comfort, if we were in need of additional assistance, and were made privy to notes regarding the day. We were also informed of staff that would assist in monitoring our stations in the event authors would need to take a break for lunch or to tend to business elsewhere for a moment. There were enough support staff on hand to assist all authors in a comfortable rotation.
A continental breakfast and lunch were provided for authors. The food was delicious and of good portion. During the day, authors were free to visit the Hospitality room for coffee, juices, and light snacks. The catering service was outstanding and the food was never in short supply.
Despite the lack of full cooperation from Mother Nature, there was a steady flow of guests throughout the day. There were gratefully minimal moments when I was able to take a break from visitors.
When I did manage to find a moment, I spent time meeting many of the other authors in attendance. I learned that guest authors came from places nationwide: Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Memphis to name a few. All of the authors were friendly and expressed how glad they were to be in attendance. Many told of publishing success stories, shared tips of the trade, and invited others nearby and myself to attend functions in their cities. The networking was wonderful! I believe I connected with people for which I will definitely remain in contact.
Throughout the day, authors were invited to take to the microphone and to tell those in attendance about their works. Doing so was an excellent way to promote oneself and to “drum up” more business. One lady even sang about her book, which I deemed creative and engaging. The Dayton Book Expo theme song also played at intervals and added to the ambiance. I only wish the theme song had been played a bit more during the course of the day.
The day’s activities also included raffle prizes, giveaways, and a well-constructed and well-monitored Kidz Zone. As I passed the children’s area during intervals, the children seemed highly engaged. I overheard one parent mentioning how she appreciated the Kidz Zone as she felt comfortable leaving her children while she perused books and met authors.
The day ended with an awards ceremony for authors. That was a great way to show appreciation to vendors for attending the event. The awards given were of good quality and came beautifully packaged. I am blessed to have been amongst those honored.
I am glad to have been a part of the Dayton Book Expo and I tip my hat to the coordinators – LaTonya Branham, Charlotte Brown and Valerie J. Lewis Coleman. I will make preparations now to attend next year’s event!

With thanks and appreciation

Thank you so much for your hospitality and arrangement of the Dayton Book Expo this past Saturday.  It was one of the best run events in which I've participated.  Please keep me informed of any future opportunities.  Take care.

I wanted to take the time to let you ladies know what a wonderful job you did with the Dayton Book Expo!

From the moment I arrived, I was impressed with the central location to identify my table. The tables had tablecloths, numbered (professionally) and arranged perfectly. Authors were set up according to the designated time and the opportunity given to authors to share about our book was great!

Although I wanted and expected more foot traffic, this does not keep me from participating next year and the networking was wonderful!

I definitely want to keep abreast of any events you do if the Dayton Expo was an indication of the excellence in which you operate.

Hats off, ladies!!!!

"The Lord is good! [Dayton Book Expo Bestselling Nonfiction] is my first author award! Val, it seems that you are connected to my beginnings. You were the first to select and publish my piece, The Check for $3.96 [Blended Families An Anthology]! Girl, this event was a great learning experience for me to share the story: if you are not alright, don't say that you are! Luv yah!"
